MLK Day: A day to remember

Every year Martin Luther King, Jr. Day comes around and many people take the day off and think nothing more of it.

Kings “I Have a Dream” speech may be taught in school, but how many of us can recall any of his other speeches?

The day before he was assassinated King said this in his “I’ve been to the Mountain Top” speech: “Something is happening in our world. The masses of people are rising up. And wherever they are assembled today whether they are in Johannesburg, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; Accra, Ghana; New York City; Atlanta, Georgia; Jackson, Mississippi; or Memphis, Tennessee — the cry is always the same: ‘We want to be free.’”

After King’s autopsy, the medical examiner revealed that he had the heart of a 60 year old even though he was only 39. The theory is that was due to the stress of fighting for his dream.

The struggles this man endured were substantial and he fought them to make sure that every one of us is equal.

This year take some time to learn about this great man and honor him on his day.
