The All Veterans Council of Tom Green County hosted a Memorial Day Commemoration at the Tom Green County Courthouse, May 29.

The event featured the posting of the colors and singing of the National Anthem. The event also featured Col. Alejandro Ganster, 17th Training Group Commander, as the guest speaker.

“Today is Memorial Day,” said Ganster, “A time to remember and commemorate the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for our country.”

Ganster emphasized the importance of remembering those who died for America.

“They were not lured by glory and riches,” said Ganster. “They knew that freedom was not free. And they were willing to pay the price.”

At the end of the ceremony, members of local veterans' organizations placed wreaths by the veteran memorial near the courthouse and four retired service members from the All Veterans Council lowered the flag during "Taps."

“Let us hope,” said Ganster. “That all Americans, during the hustle and bustle of a three-day weekend, will find a moment to pause, reflect and perhaps whisper a thank you to those American heroes who made it all possible.”
