Remembering the fallen Published May 29, 2017 By Airman 1st Class Chase Sousa 17th Training Wing Public Affairs SAN ANGELO, Texas -- The 17th Training Wing, San Angelo community and Vietnam Veterans of America re-dedicated the Mathis Field Vietnam Memorial as part of Memorial Day at the San Angelo Regional Airport May 29. The re-dedication included the Goodfellow Air Force Base Joint Service Color Guard posting the colors and a guest speech from Brenda Gunter, San Angelo Mayor. "It always amazes me how much San Angelo cares about their military. You all take such great care of us, both living, and those that have gone before,” said Col. Jeffrey Sorrell, 17th Training Wing Vice Commander. The re-dedication ceremony also hosted a vocal ensemble and guest violinist who played "taps" for the fallen. "I'm proud to be out here honoring Vietnam veterans today,” said Sorrell. “These men gave their lives for their country and fought with everything they had. No matter what their countrymen thought of them, they kept fighting and unfortunately, some fights followed them home. Things didn't come easy for them and today is a great day to pay our respects."
